More Americans Are Getting Filler Injections and Other Cosmetic Procedures

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 2.2 million of us had soft tissue fillers injected last year—doing a lot of “filling.” New research warns us to be careful about who does those procedures, since “adverse events are an increasing problem, and recently, it has been suggested that bacteria are the cause of a vast fraction of these. … The infections are resistant to antibiotics once established but can be prevented using prophylactic antibiotics,” meaning taking them in advance.  It follows that healthcare professionals or  aestheticians must be rigorous about using sterile needles and following appropriate procedures.
